What to do when the Google Algorithm Updates?


1. Wait for the panic to die down.

With great news comes great panic. There will be a lot of misinformation spread around the web about the changes. Chances are the effects will be minor to your website, unless you’re using black hat SEO or aren’t keeping up with best practices. Usually, this lasts around a couple of hours. In the meantime, grab a coffee and prepare for some reading.


2. Check official and trusted sources.

Take a look at the Google Webmaster Central Blog to see what the official statement is. Check out our blog, Search Marketing Land or other trusted SEO sources to see what the experts are saying.


3. Check your google rank.

Open an incognito or private browser window. Google terms you know you rank well for to see if you still come up in the right position. Alternatively, check your webmaster console.


4. Look at the changes Google has posted and see if anything might affect your website.

Look at what Google has posted. If it is something to do with ‘content quality’ you might need to start thinking about your content marketing efforts. If it’s to do with ‘link quality’ then you may need to check out who is linking to you and have a clean-up. Look at the language Google uses, then work out where on your site you need to improve. You should be doing this regardless of whether you’re affected by the updates. Your competitors will be aligning themselves with the new rules, so should you.

Google Algorithm changes can hit hard. Sometimes they can take a long time to fix. Other times, a few tweaks will suffice. The main thing to do is not to panic.
